What to gather

1) Identification & Eligibility

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Legal eligibility to work in the U.S.
  • Valid driver’s license (most trades) + reliable transportation

2) Education Records

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Official transcripts (request early)
  • Proof of basic algebra completion (especially electrical)

3) Aptitude Readiness

  • Algebra refresh (fractions, equations, word problems)
  • Reading comprehension (tests + safety manuals)
  • Mechanical reasoning (varies by trade)

What else matters

4) Work History & References

  • Previous employers + dates
  • Supervisor contact info or credible references
  • Honesty beats polish — don’t inflate your background

5) Physical & Medical Readiness

  • Ability to lift, climb, and work outdoors in heat/cold
  • Drug testing is common
  • Safety responsibility to coworkers matters

6) Background Checks

A record doesn’t always disqualify you. Dishonesty often does.

Wisconsin timing reality: Many committees accept applications year-round, but they still use closing dates for interview rounds. Treat it like a real application window and apply early.

Official WI apprenticeship directory: WI DWD Local Apprenticeship Committees

Do these 4 things this week

  • Request official transcripts
  • Do 30 minutes of algebra three times
  • Run the 3-posting test in your driving radius
  • Call one training office and ask about the next intake cutoff

Momentum wins. A week of small action beats three months of endless research.

Questions to ask the training center

  • What’s the next intake window or interview round?
  • What’s the cutoff date for that round?
  • Do you require algebra credit or a placement score?
  • How are applicants ranked — test, interview, work history?
  • What documents do you want day one?
  • Is there a drug test, and when?
  • Are there posted orientation dates?
  • What’s the best contact for follow-up?
